KIELDER RESERVOIR Kielder Reservoir was built in the late 70's early 80's to maintain an adequate water supply to the North East. The dam wall was constructed just above the village of Falstone in the North Tyne valley, the head of the dam lies below the village of Kielder itself, hence its name. Finally opened in May 1982 by HRH Queen Elizabeth II, Kielder Reservoir had the claim of being the largest man made lake in Europe, it had swamped 2,684 acres of land, was 7 miles long with 27 miles of shoreline and holds 44 thousand million gallons of water. Being the largest man made lake in Britain surrounded by the largest man made forest in Britain makes Kielder Reservoir a visitor attraction of its own right, essentially built as a source of water supply its potential has been tapped . There are numerous opportunities to enjoy water sports, varying from wind surfing, sailing, canoeing and water skiing to the more tranquil sport of fishing as the reservoir was stocked with more than a quarter of a million Rainbow trout. A ferry also runs the length of the reservoir enabling A land beings A to appreciate its beauty further. There are many picnic sites scattered all over the area, with paths and bridleways winding their way around the shore and through the forestry, mountain bikes can be hired and most of the hardened forestry roads are closed to vehicular access. Tower Knowe at the foot of the dam has a tea room and information site, there are camp sites available along with numerous Bed and Breakfast facilities in local homes, if you fancy a more scandinavian feel there are log cabins at the Leaplish Waterside Park, also the home of the Birds of Prey Centre where not only can one enjoy the variety of birds kept but there are also handling and flying courses. The forestry surrounding the reservoir is home to a wealth of wildlife, roe deer will be sighted in abundance, red squirrels are indigenous to this part of Britain and it seems possible the polecat may well be making a comeback. The bird life varies immensely from the small and beautiful long tailed tits to the slightly larger Goshawks. Amidst all this natural beauty there are numerous sites of modern art dotted throughout the forestry ranging from tree sculptures to the latest acquisition of Skyspace, a circular stone built thing which is best visited at dawn or dusk to reap the benefits of the skies aura. There is plenty for everyone to enjoy at Kielder reservoir whether they be young or old, fast or slow, sociable or unsociable it caters for all alike. |
