Bellingham Bellingham is a small rural town situated approximately fifteen miles North West of Hexham lying on the edge of the Northumberland National Park, the river North Tyne runs past the town itself on its route from Kielder Reservoir towards Hexham, the river being a noted spawning ground for both salmon and sea trout, brown trout and the occasional ‘Kielder’ rainbow are also to be caught on line. For a rural town Bellingham is exceptionally well catered for, boasting two caravan sites, camping site, a youth hostel, four Pubs and Hotels, Petrol station (with rural opening times - no 24 hour cover here), Post Office , 2 Butchers, a Bakers, Chemist, Hardware store, Newsagent, 2 Craft shops, Cafes, Haberdashery and Grocery shops as well as a small but adequate Co-op. Thursday is half day closing and the majority of the shops also close on a Saturday afternoon, as does the petrol station. People travel far and wide to visit Bellingham golf course which over recent years has been brought up to a very high standard, including a floodlit driving range. The Riverdale Hotel on the outskirts of the town has a cricket field as well as an indoor swimming pool, the town also possesses a Gymnasium and Library. The famous Pennine Way runs very close to Bellingham making the town an ideal stopping off point. For those who would prefer a more leisurely stroll there is always Hareshaw Linn to visit, a most enjoyable walk up Hareshaw burn through deciduous woodland, over wooden bridges criss crossing the burn before reaching the finale - the awesome Linn itself, take a picnic, enjoy the stroll and you’ll not be disappointed with the outcome. The walk up to the Linn abounds with wildlife, red squirrels still have a stronghold in this area, roe deer, fox, badger, mink and stoat may also be seen as well as the many and varied birdlife. St Cuthberts church is steeped in local history being the final resting place of the ‘Lang Pack’, a tail which hails back to 1723. The church itself dates back to the thirteenth century, St Cuthberts well which lies in the grounds in dedication to the saint himself. Bellingham hosts an annual agricultural show on the last Saturday in August, sheep, cattle and horses are in abundance, main ring attractions keep visitors amused all day and many side attractions such as the country fair, Cumberland and Westmorland wrestling and Northumbrian piping all help to make it a great family day out. The Auction Mart is also busy in the months of August, September and October with thousands of sheep being sold from the nearby hills through this traditional mart. The natives of Bellingham are a friendly bunch and the surrounding landscape is beautiful, varying from green and rolling to wild and beautiful, if peace and quiet are what you seek look no further. |
