Hexham

Like many major towns and cities in Europe, the origin of Hexham stems from the timeless desire of pious men to find tranquility and solitude, only to have it forever removed by the daunting approach of human reality. In 674AD Queen Eltheldreda wife of the then King of Northumbria, Ecgfrid, gave the town of Hexham to St. Wilfrid in order that he may make it an ecclesiastical centre. Building of the Abbey commenced in that year and the privilege of Sanctuary was obtained for it and confirmed by the Pope, Bishops, Kings and Princes.

Stained glass window in Hexham Abbey

Hark, What light through yonder window breaks?

When St Wilfred first built his abbey on the terrace overlooking the beautiful Tyne River in 671 A.D. he sought peace and quiet for his monks and followers. Almost immediately a town sprang up right next to it, and by the time the abbey was replaced after the Norman Conquest by the priory church of St. Andrew constructed by Augustinian monks, it dominated the marketplace, just as it continues to do today.

There is a temptation to view Hexham as a one- site town, that there is nothing of consequence except for the abbey… but little could be further from the truth. The old gaol (jail) and it's accompanying museum, the marketplace Shambles and the Moot Hall, the Elizabeth 1 Grammar School, the Seal Park and Tynedale Park, the Border History Museum and the walks along the Tyne itself are all more than worthy of visiting and can be quite useful in placing the Abbey itself in context with it's environment.

The market town of Hexham is the seat of Tynedale District Council and has a historic Abbey with a world famous organ. There is an annual music festival, weekly mart, and a wide range of stores and shops catering for all needs. With a public golf course, swimming pool, and other sports and recreation facilities Hexham is ideally placed as a base for exploring the southern part of Northumberland and the northern part of Durham. There is a range of shops and stores, several excellent restaurants, and ample hotel and Bed and Breakfast accommodation in the area. From Hexham it is a short journey to Hadrian’s Wall, Kielder, Haltwhistle, Newcastle or Carlisle.
