KIELDER Kielder village lies at the head of Kielder Reservoir, very close to the Scottish border, originally it was a vast hill farming area, trees started to be planted in the 1930's and soon thousands of acres were covered with evergreen commercial afforestation, leading to the largest man made forest in Britain. By the 1950's a lack of housing for forestry commission workers brought about the need for new housing and indeed a new village and so Kielder was built. Kielder is no longer the forestry village it was intended to be as modern machinery and the need for cheaper timber has lead to job cuts , however it is still a thriving community becoming more and more geared up to the leisure pursuits required by visitors to the reservoir. A lovely area to go pony trekking or to enjoy the many wooded walks, in February the village is host to Husky racing, weather permitting this can be a truly scandinavian experience. Snow is guaranteed at Kielder in the winter but when and how much will fall one never knows. The Environment Agency along with Northumbria Water built a fish hatchery at Kielder at the same time the reservoir was being built, this was necessary to compensate for the loss of spawning grounds for the migratory Salmon and Sea Trout which run up the North Tyne river. These fish are caught and stripped of their eggs which are then nurtured at the hatchery until they have hatched and are strong enough to be released back into the wild to restock the river, the hatchery is open to the public on an appointment basis and is well worth a visit. Kielder castle graces the centre of the village, once a shooting lodge belonging to the Duke of Northumberland it is now home of the tourist information centre and tea room, Forest Enterprise organise many events from this majestic building, bat watching can be a favourite amongst visitors in the summer months, in the run up to Christmas Kielder castle is the place to visit to get that fresh christmas tree to adorn the lounge it also hosts a christmas craft fair. Kielder music festival is held in August, a week of musical entertainment from many corners of the world, a chance to hear the Northumbrian pipes played in their native homeland, local musicians along side musicians from abroad all sharing their various talents for the general public to enjoy. There is a forest drive which enables the motorist or enthusiastic walker or cyclist to leave the North Tyne valley and cross over into the Rede, the drive takes you through the forestry, past routes often used when car rallies compete in the area, to arrive at Byrness village, which nestles at the bottom of the famous Carter Bar, the boundary between England and Scotland. |
