The Highlands of Scotland

This vast area of Northern Scotland stretches from Appin and Glencoe in the south to John O'Groats in the north and from Aviemore and Grantown on Spey in the east to Skye in the west.

For the most part, the Highlands are sparsely populated but the mountainous terrain, rivers, lochs, glens and islands offer scenic beauty that is enjoyed by millions of visitors every year from all over the world. At the heart of this area lies Inverness an expanding, modern, proud and historic city which still attracts most of the visitors coming into the area.

Touring accounts for a large proportion of visitors who tend to visit the "usual" haunts of Fort William, Inverness, Aviemore, Skye etc. However, to see the "real" Highlands you have to get off these main roads, get out of your car and walk to see the more remote areas and be at one with the natural, peaceful environment. This demand for outdoor activities, especially hillwalking and climbing in the mountains around Fort William (Ben Nevis, Glencoe, Mamores), Aviemore (Cairngorms), Wester Ross (Torridon) and Skye (Cuillins) increases every year and continues throughout the year.

This is an area which must be treated with the respect it fully deserves.
